Frequently Asked Questions

We have answers to the most common questions about our products and services.

General Questions [21 Questions]

What is the difference between monthly and annual pricing?

Our monthly plans allow you to cancel your plan’s renewal anytime with no long-term commitment. However, you get the best discount with our annual plans which are prepaid for the duration of the term. You can switch billing cycles at any time.

What is your cancellation policy?

We are certain you will enjoy using polur.net’s services. However, if you’re not satisfied for any reason, you can decide to cancel before the renewal date of your plan. For monthly billing cycles, we ask that you submit your cancellation request at least 5 business days before the renewal date to avoid any recurring charges. We do not provide any prorated refunds for our annual prepaid plans due to the built-in discounts that we offer with them. Therefore, if you’re not sure if a service is right for you, we suggest sticking with our month-to-month billing cycle as you can lock-in to our annual billing cycle at anytime.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept all Visa and Mastercard debit and credit cards, PayPal (which also accepts American Express credit card) and mail-in checks (the latter only for annual prepaid plans).

What currencies can I pay in?

polur.net supports payments made both in Canadian dollars (CAD) or US dollars (USD). You can switch between currencies on our pricing pages by using the currency toggle on the right hand side of your browser.

What support options do you offer?

We offer a variety of support options to serve you.  Please see our dedicated Support page for more information.

The myPolur client portal is accessible 24/7 which allows you to submit a ticket for any sales, technical support, billing or other inquiry. One of our knowledgeable agents will usually respond within a few hours. We also offer premium phone support at an additional cost for those customers that need to speak to a real live human to address their issue. New sales calls are free. Our datacenter is monitored 24/7, 365 days a year, so that we ensure your services will always stay working reliably and securely around the clock. Visit our support page for more information.

How are NVMe SSDs different from SSDs and traditional drives?

NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) is a relatively new technology that helps address some of the limitations of earlier storage solutions. It is a protocol designed for using high-speed storage media.Solid state drives (SSDs) provide faster read/write speeds compared to traditional hard drive disks (HDDs). However, over the years, the speed of SSDs increased until they reached the max transfer rate for the storage protocols.

NVMe SSDs are much faster compared to earlier SSDs. In fact, the typical NVMe drive handles read/write processes three to four times faster. When compared to traditional HDDs, NVMe drives perform up to 10 times faster.

What backup options are available?

We automatically take daily backups with our SSD Shared & SSD Multi-Account, intended to protect against major disasters. They are not intended to be relied upon for daily use. However, if you rely on snapshots or want to revert your site to another time quickly and easily on your own without restrictions, we offer a number of flexible backup system options: (1) a remote backup  facility using JetBackup and integrated within cPanel,  available on any SSD Shared & SSD Multi-Account plan for a nominal fee; or (2) more advanced backup options through our partnership with CodeGuard. You can add either option when placing your order for the first time or via myPolur at any time.

What is overselling and how does it affect me?

Overselling refers to the process in which providers assume most of their customers won't use their allotted storage and therefore pack more customers than their hardware can handle. At polur, we go the extra mile to ensure each server operates at its peak performance even if every user uses their full allotment. Each server we operate has enough capacity for all our customers to use their full package quota, while still leaving ample room for future growth.

Do you offer domain registration?

Yes! When you purchase a hosting plan with polur.net, you have the option of purchasing a domain (or several!) for your website. For existing customers, you can visit the myPolur order portal to easily buy new domains. Finally, we also offer domain registrations through our affiliate services and partners. Visit our Add-ons page to learn more.

How do I transfer my hosting from another provider?

If you are currently with another hosting provider, we’re pleased to provide free migrations to polur.net*. Place your order for one of our plans, then just get in touch with our support team!

*Free migrations available for cPanel or DirectAdmin-based hosting providers only. Migrations from other providers may incur a nominal fee. Contact our sales team for questions.

What is a SSL certificate and how will it help me?

We include a free SSL certificate for every website (domain) on your plan, as long as you are either using our provided nameservers, or pointing your website to our server IP address (via DNS "A" and "AAAA" records).

An SSL certificate ensures all traffic to your website is encrypted, which is necessary for processing online payments and even processing login information for your end-users. Browsers now show a warning when entering into a non-SSL secured website, so this can be avoided with any one of our hosting plans.  For those that want to go beyond the basic SSL requirements, we also offer extended validation (EV), wildcard SSL and other types of premium SSL products for order.

What is LiteSpeed and how does it benefit me?

LiteSpeed is a commercial web server software that can handle thousands of clients simultaneously while using a minimal amount of server resources, including CPU and memory. It also compatible with the Apache's htaccess and mod_security features and comes with additional anti-DDoS (denial-of-service) protection for greater security. LiteSpeed is maintained by a commercial entity while Apache is an open-source program. Advantages of LiteSpeed compared to Apache include:

  • Faster speeds for web pages and applications
  • Improved PHP performance
  • Better protection against DDOS attacks
  • Compatibility with Apache

LiteSpeed provides a significant speed advantage. The default configuration of a LiteSpeed server is up to six times faster. On average, LiteSpeed may improve the performance of PHP servers by up to 50% or more. Compared to Apache servers running the EA4 default with CGI, LiteSpeed delivers up to 200 times the performance. Combining LiteSpeed and CloudLinux brings multiple benefits. Along with the improved performance of the LiteSpeed servers, you get increased stability, efficiency, and speed from CloudLinux.

LiteSpeed offers a faster, more powerful alternative to Apache, making it a great choice for almost any website, application, or database. It is suitable for low-traffic and high-traffic sites, including everything from small personal blogs to large eCommerce sites.

What is CloudLinux and how does it benefit me?

CloudLinux OS is the leading commercial platform which increases the server security, efficiency, and stability by isolating each user in its own Lightweight Virtualized Environments (LVE). It is a unique environment consists of its own CPU, memory, IO, IOPS, number of processes and other limits. This will make sure that over usage of any users will not threaten the stability of the server as a whole. Gone are the days where if a particular user experiences sudden traffic and begins to consume all the resources, it would result in downtime for everyone. Rather than increasing the server load, CloudLinux will slow down only that particular user’s account.

Overall, all our plans that use CloudLinux will benefit from increased server stability, security and efficiency compared to other providers who rely on traditional Linux OS environment. Customers can get the benefit of ‘cloud’ hosting’s stability without the marketing gimmicks they typically represent.

What is Softaculous?

Softaculous lets you focus on using apps rather than spending time on installing them. Install PHP, Perl and JavaScript applications to your domain with just a single click. These include popular scripts like WordPress, Joomla, XenForo, phpBB, Magento, MediaWiki and more.

There are a wide variety of applications are available to be easily installed on our plans, including web portals, e-commerce solutions, content management systems, blogs, polls, forums and more. Softaculous also has an easy-to-use auto-update (to keep your scripts automatically updated) and backup feature, allowing for the backup of installations at anytime.

Do you offer SSH access?

Our VPS plans and Dedicated Servers come with full root SSH access, out-of-the-box. For our SSD Shared and SSD Multi-Account plans, we do offer limited SSH access on request for advanced users, with appropriate justification for intended use. Many functions can be accomplished using our fully featured control panel, cPanel.

How do I cancel my account?

We strive to keep each and every one of our customers happy with their products and services offered through polur.net. If, however, you desire to cancel your account with us, you may do so by submitting a cancellation request through your myPolur client portal by going to Services > Request Cancellation.

Are there any extra fees you charge?

At polur.net, we believe in no hidden fees and no unexpected cost increases during your term. Other than certain limited-time promotions we may offer from time to time, what you see on the checkout page is what you'll pay on a recurring basis depending on the length of your plan term. Please note, domain registrations are billed separately from your hosting plan (you may use a third-party domain registrar, or the competitively-priced domain registration services we offer). There may be some additional fees applicable for certain addon services or out-of-scope support services we offer. Please consult our Additional Fees page for further information to see if any of these are applicable to you.

I can't see the option to create a new PayPal Subscription?

For PayPal payments, we offer both manual (one-time) PayPal payments and PayPal Subscriptions, which create an automatic recurring subscription.

The option to pay by PayPal Subscription won't be visible on the invoice unless it's on or before the due date of the invoice,.  If you have passed the due date on the invoice, you can still submit a manual PayPal payment and create a new PayPal Subscription on the next invoice before the invoice due date, after it gets generated.

If you don't see any of the PayPal payment options, simply choose "PayPal / PayPal Subscription" from the invoice payment method drop down menu on the top right corner of the invoice  to change your payment method.  The PayPal one-time payment button as well as the PayPal Subscription button, if applicable, will be shown.

Is SSD Shared Hosting right for me?

Our SSD Shared Hosting plans are great for most common websites that don’t have a lot of traffic, have straightforward software and resource requirements, and minimal customization needs. We suggest choosing your plan based on the number of websites (domains) you plan to host, storage and your website traffic. Try our Solution Finder for narrowing your choices.

How much storage (space) do I need for my website?

Storage in a webhosting environment refers to the amount of space you use to store all your website content, images, videos, emails, databases, scripts, downloads and everything else you upload to your account. The content of your website determines the space requirements. Storage is distinguishable from bandwidth. Disk space is file storage space, and bandwidth is the amount of data that is transferred from your website to visitors. So when we talk about disk space, that number remains the same whether ten or ten thousand visitors access it. Each visitor to your website that downloads or accesses content on your website contributes to the overall bandwidth usage.

In general, most website pages are only a few megabytes (MB). However, application configuration files, logs, email — it all adds up. If you use WordPress, Joomla, Magento or other open-source platform, the database content they use also counts toward your overall storage usage.

All our plans come with a generous amount of both storage and bandwidth, so for most customers, these are not limiting factors. Instead, what you may need to consider are the number of websites you can host within a single account, how many email accounts you require, features — such as WordPress only or SSH access, and traffic plus resource usage, which may necessitate a more robust plan.

Not sure what the right plan is for you? Use our Solution Finder step-by-step wizard to help you figure out what requirements you have and which plan is best suited for your needs!

Will other users cause downtime for my website?

Unlike traditional shared hosting offered by many of our competitors, we offer complete resource isolation  through our use of CageFS and CloudLinux. We’re able to guarantee your website performance and uptime even if a neighbor uses too many server resources.

What is considered a "Domain" in my plan?

Each domain (website) you operate is considered a separate website for the purposes of determining your "Domain" quota provided in your plan. For example, say your main website is myfirstshop.com. If you want to add a personal blog to host on the same account/hosting package, such as yourblog.com, some plans will allow you to do so without forcing you to purchase a separate hosting package.

You will still need to pay for the domain registration of the additional websites you want to host (the myPolur portal will let you do this quickly and easily), but the hosting plan can be shared among multiple websites/domains you have.

You can also decide to create a domain alias, for example, you may want my1stshop.com to redirect to myfirstshop.com; this is again considered an additional "Website" for the purposes of your plan specification.

What happens if I go over my limits?

To prevent service interruption on your account, we allow you to exceed the limits of your plan. However, exceeding your designated quota means you will incur an additional per megabyte (MB) or per gigabyte (GB) fee depending on the resource being exceed. Consult our additional fees table for more information.

Is email access included with my hosting plan?

Unlike other providers like Wix or SquareSpace, we do include full-featured email access, including iOS push notifications, IMAP synchronization for all devices, SSL-secured mail servers and webmail access with all our plans. Email usage is included in your general account storage quota. You can also create as many email accounts (you@yourdomain.com) as you desire. We also offer very strong anti-spam and anti-malware protection.

Why is it called "Shared" Hosting? What is being "Shared"?

Shared hosting refers to resources that are divided up from a larger dedicated server and sold to clients as individual packages. This saves you the cost of purchasing your own dedicated server, while still getting full access and management for your account. As each dedicated server's physical resources such as CPU, memory, drives and bandwidth are shared among many clients with no physical separation, "shared" hosting differs from virtual private server and dedicated server hosting plans.

How is SSD Multi-Account Hosting different from SSD Shared Hosting?

Both our SSD Shared and SSD Multi-Account plans are based on the same backend server architecture. The main difference is the additional ability and reseller-only functions, such as cPanel's Web Host Manager (WHM) that are offered exclusively with our SSD Multi-Account plans, giving you the ability to manage multiple end-user accounts. SSD Multi-Account plans are a great, cost-effective alternative to purchasing multiple separate SSD Shared Hosting plans, since you can manage all of your domains/websites and accounts within a single unified interface.

My website appears to be down

Each server we operate is protected by a robust firewall to prevent unauthorized access attempts, block malicious users, port sniffers and hackers.

However, on occasion, our firewall may block a legitimate user or customer accessing your website. Your website will only appear to be down when accessed from that IP address, but in reality, it is fully operational to anyone outside of that computer/device/network.

On extremely rare circumstances, our server may be experiencing a temporary outage or glitch. You can access our Network Status page from within myPolur to confirm if that is the case.

If you do not notice any Network Status updates, then it is likely that your IP is being blocked by our server firewall. You can also confirm by going to a monitoring site such as www.siteuptime.com and entering your domain name under Quick Check, or at https://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/. You can also confirm this by accessing your site from any other computer on a different IP address, mobile device (accessed on mobile data network)  or by proxy.

The likely reason your IP is blocked by the server firewall is for a security violation (e.g. multiple incorrect login attempts, port scanning behavior,  malicious script found on your site, or  errors caused by our mod_security protection software (which helps prevent most website attacks).

Please contact our support team with the following details to expedite your firewall unblock request:

  • Your account's domain name
  • Your account's server name (refer to your original order's Welcome Email)
  • IP address(es) from the problematic device which can be accessed by visiting www.whatismyip.com (provide us both with IPv4 and IPv6 address if both are shown)

We generally respond to unblock requests quickly to ensure you're back in business, and usually can provide you the reason for the block. If you need your password or control panel credentials reset, please submit this information on the same ticket.

For our SSD Shared and SSD Multi-Account plans, we do offer limited SSH access on request for advanced users, with appropriate justification for intended use. Many functions can be accomplished using our fully featured control panel, cPanel.

What is SSD Multi-Account Hosting?

SSD Multi-Account Hosting is ideal for web designers, web developers, SEO/marketing agencies, resellers and even other web hosting providers who are seeking the ability to create individualized logins for their customers or end-users to manage their own website, while still being able to oversee those accounts. For example, if you are a web designer and want to provide a value-added hosting plan to your customer, you can easily do so with our SSD Multi-Account plan. Simply create a separate account for this customer, and they won't know you're being hosted through polur.net! We don't restrict how much you charge or what kinds of plans you can sell for your end-users, as long as it's within the allotted quota for your SSD Multi-Account plan.

What is Web Host Manager (WHM)?

WHM (Web Host Manager) is a control dashboard that gives the user the ability to manage multiple cPanel-based sites. You have the power to monitor all activity on your websites and jump between cPanels easily. WHM also allows you to adjust the bandwidth and disk space of each account.

WHM gives you a lot more control and flexibility when managing either a few very popular and resource intensive sites, or large number of sites. On top of giving you the ability to sell hosting services to other people, WHM also gives you the option to create and manage multiple end-user cPanel accounts (i.e. a single SSD Shared Hosting account). There are lots of really good reasons, if you have business oriented or popular sites, to place them on separate account, as follows:

  • Create, delete, and suspend your cPanel accounts.
  • Manage and monitor your sites (password resets).
  • Access to check and change all of your domains' DNS zones.
  • The ability to configure your own customers' support requests through cPanel.
  • Permission to check the server information and status.
  • Ability to create your own default page when you create a new account.
  • Access to customize your hosting and control panel with extensive branding.
  • Ability to change your client domain names and user names.
  • Hop between every cPanel on your account and access/change anything.

Is SSD Multi-Account Hosting the same as Reseller Hosting?

We previously referred to our Multi-Account plans as "Reseller" hosting to distinguish it from our standard Shared Hosting plans. However, the term "reseller" appears restrictive, as you do not necessarily need to resell the accounts within your package. You can simply use it to manage multiple websites of your own and customize it any way you wish — reseller or not.

Can I add more accounts?

Each SSD Multi-Account plan comes with a preset number of accounts (allowing individualized logins). If you require more than what is allotted in your plan, we suggest upgrading your plan. If you need more accounts than the highest plan we offer, contact our sales department for a custom plan.

What is the difference between an Account and a Domain?

When referring to accounts in the context of our href="/solutions/ssd-multi-account">SSD Multi-Account plans, we refer to the separate login you have the ability to create within that package. However, within each account you create, you can host as many domains as you desire, as we have no hard limit on them (although we do not recommend more than 10 due to the increased difficulty in managing multiple domains within a single account). If you're a reseller, you can even limit and create your own "shared" hosting packages for your end-users by limiting the number of domains they can put within a single account.

What is a VPS?

With a VPS, you may share a number of physical resources such as disk space, CPU and RAM with others, but you will still be have complete control on the software side. A big server is called a ‘node’, and the VPS is just a small part of this node. But a virtual private server still allows users to be in charge, fully, of all their own settings and configurations. This freedom allows you to customize and make any changes or adjustments that you need on the fly.

What is the difference between a VPS and dedicated server?

Virtual servers are limited by the host-node that they exist on and in turn, their resources can only go so high before a limit is reached. While virtual does scale well, it is limited by the availability of resources on the host-node. On a host-node there are several virtual servers at the same time, so while your package may have set resources allocated you may sometimes experience issues although rare.

When using a Dedicated server, your resources are yours and yours alone. There is no sharing of resources such as what occurs on a virtual server. Dedicated servers can be constantly upgraded to larger allocations compared to a virtual server which allows for them continue improving.

What does Managed VPS mean?

Managed VPS hosting is the ideal solution for everyone regardless of skill, since we take care of any technical tasks related to the server. In other words, we will manage all the hardware, continuously update system software, ensure security, and maintain hardware resources to run according to the VPS package specification.

What can I do with a VPS?

A VPS can be used for many different applications. It can be used for web hosting, an email server, SAAS applications, DNS Cluster and so forth. The limitations of a VPS come down to the application requirements needed — a VPS will be able to run most applications that require root access depending on its needs.

How do I know when to move from Shared Hosting to a VPS?

If you're a new customer and you're considering an upgrade to a VPS from a shared hosting environment (existing shared or reseller hosting plan), we recommend talking to our experienced sales team to help guide you through the migration process and offer some considerations before you make the jump.
